This month we are Right on Time for LOVE! As women in the 60+ season of life, we have learned a thing or two about love.
Over the years, love has been one of life’s greatest teachers, for perhaps no emotion is more central to our human experience. At six years old, I loved Bonanza’s Little Joe Cartwright and my parakeet Butchie. Throughout most of elementary school, my heart pined for Carl Arrechi. (alas, a love that remained unrequited)
But love is larger than romance, and with the wisdom of our years, we have learned to love in wider and wider circles. Who do you love? Consider that for a moment. If you were to make a Love List, who might be on it? A beloved partner? Your children and grandchildren? Parents, siblings, pets? Close friends? I hope your life’s Love List is long, even as it may be filled with both joy and heartache. But take another look at your list. I’ll bet there’s one person whose name is missing. Did you remember to include yourself?
This month’s blog is dedicated to the person who deserves your love more than anyone else... YOU! Women find it so easy to love and care for others. Yet, the things we say and do when it comes to us? Most of us would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves.
Are you willing to elevate your self-talk? Affirmations can be powerful tools for self-love. Next time you find yourself the target of your own harsh judgement, replace that criticism with a more loving thought. Ready to try it now? Whisper the following affirmation to yourself:
“I am willing to become my own best friend.”
How did that feel? The first time I whispered those words to myself, my eyes filled with tears. My tender heart had been waiting for me to come home.
During February, the season of the heart, I invite you to celebrate your circle of love. Include everyone you hold dear to your heart, and remember to save a place of honor for the woman with the biggest heart of all... you.
If you need a little help activating the energies of your heart, I invite you to try this brief Loving Kindness Meditation. Even if you've never meditated before, just close your eyes and listen along. May it be a soothing balm to your big, beautiful, loving heart!
